Engraver. b.Assendelft, orphaned and initially a farm worker. With help of a local patron, late in life entered circle of Goltzius in 1589 and of de Gheyn. Set up on his own account in Assendelft c.1595, and already recognised by van Mander in 1602 as an outstanding figure in Dutch engraving. Turned to designing as well as engraving from around 1600. Father of Pieter (q.v.).
