Jacob Frey
Engraver and publisher. Born Lucerne, moved to Rome in 1702, where he was trained by A. Westerhout. Began by publishing his own plates and later began publishing works of others. Seems to have been the preferred engraver of Maratta. His stock of plates descended to his son Filippo, who later sold then to the Calcografia Camera (now in the Rome Calcografia). According to Huber ('Manuel des Curieux', 1797, p.79) Filippo retouched all the plates badly and these were the impressions on sale at that moment.
