Michael J. Gallagher

American, 1898 - 1965

Michael J. Gallagher 'Michael Gallagher': An early twentieth century Pennsylvania artist, Michael J. Gallagher is known for his paintings, lithographs, woodcuts and book illustrations. He was accomplished at both figure studies and landscapes.
Michael Gallagher's most famous works of art are the original prints he produced for the Works Progress Administration. The W.P.A. was a relief program sponsored by President Roosevelt's administration from 1935 to 1943. Original printmaking was a major element of the W.P.A. and sixteen subsidized graphic workshops were created during the Depression era. The most productive programs emerged in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Cleveland. The lithographs, woodcuts and etchings created through this program provide a unique and fascinating record of the times.
Today the original prints of Michael J. Gallagher are included in the following collections; the Georgia Museum of Art, Penn State University and the Palmer Museum of Art.
