Jean Lepautre

Designer, etcher, publisher; the first of the Lepautre dynasty, brother of Antoine the architect, and father of Jacques and Pierre. Trained as a menuisier under Adam Philippon, who published his first plates. Prints from 1644 until his death, initially for publishers such as Jean Leblond and Pierre Mariette, later for de Poilly and himself as well; his life little documented, but a member of the Académie in 1677. His widow, Marguerite Gastelier (d.1698), took over the publishing activities after his death (see notice in the Mercure for September 1686, pp.204-10) until her death in 1698. Plates then to Gantrel.
