Head of a Laughing Man

Head of a Laughing Man

After: Rembrandt (Dutch, 1606 - 1669)

Engraver: David Deuchar (Scottish, 1743 - 1808)

Date: late 18th century
Medium: ink on paper
Credit Line:Museum Purchase
Object number: 1938.226.278.154
This is a copy in reverse with variations of Rembrandt's Self-Portrait in a Cap, Laughing (1630). Deuchar’s interpretation of the Self-Portrait omits the hat and takes liberties with the pose and costume. The popularity of Rembrandt’s etchings far outlived the artist’s own lifetime. Into the early nineteenth century, collectors clamored for different “states” of his most famous impressions. To meet this demand, copyists and savvy publishers printed multiples and variations in the style of the master.
