Jan Both was a pupil of Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht before he journeyed to Rome with his brother in 1635-1641 to continue his studies. His exquisite work is limited to an output of only eighteen etchings during the course of his career. This did not prevent him from being one of the best landscape artists of the Dutch Golden Age. He introduced to Holland a style of landscape based on the classical compositions of Claude Lorrain.
