Although best known for his Italianate style landscapes, Berchem became quite involved in the genre of realistic animal portrayal. He was extremely prolific, with over 850 paintings, 500 drawings, and at least 80 etchings to his name. This etching may well have been a study for animals to have been incorporated into larger landscapes.
