This work likely shows a panoramic view of the mountains in Vermont or New Hampshire, and is typical of Lewis’s work of the early 1860s. The central village path, flanked on both sides by prominent elm trees, leads into the middle ground and to the river valley beyond, above which the majestic mountains rise. In the foreground, a group of well-dressed figures occupy the dirt road, perhaps on their way to Sunday services. A prominent limestone church tower with clock is visible on the left, and appears to be the group’s destination. Other domestic structures cluster nearby in the quaint hamlet.
