Although Victors spent much of his career in Holland, he made important visits to Italy including time spent in Venice during the 1660s, where he, no doubt, absorbed the Northern Italian taste for naturalism in art. The artist made his reputation primarily on animal paintings and more specifically bird paintings, which was his specialty. Along with other great “animaliers” of his age, including Frans Snyders, Melchior d’Hondecoeter, Jan Fyt, among others, Victors had a penchant for capturing details of birds and other natural specimens with extraordinary accuracy.
