Daubigny was among the earliest French artists to be concerned with the fleeting effects of light in nature. He captured those effects with loose and rapid brushwork.

In 1870, Daubigny fled France for England during the Franco-Prussian War. During his time abroad, he introduced Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro to his dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, who was also in exile.
