Edward Redfield trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Thomas Anshutz, Thomas Hovenden, and James Kelly. He developed an ongoing friendship with fellow student Robert Henri, with whom he traveled to Paris. This large, early winter scene by Redfield is typical of his handling of light and atmosphere. The winter-grey sky sets the atmosphere as the late afternoon sun hits the snow blanketed roof of the structure on the right side of the road. A shaft of sunlight is also visible through the row of homes on the left, falling nearly in line with the horse-drawn sleigh.
