Hopkins was a distinguished Abstract Expressionist who was part of the circle of artists in New York that included Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, and Franz Kline. In the late 1960s, the period from which this work comes, the artist began exploring large geometric forms marked by flat planes of color.
