This image has been the subject of much interpretation by Rembrandt scholars. It is known that a Dutch version of Christopher Marlowe’s play, Dr. Faustus, was performed in Amsterdam during Rembrandt’s lifetime. It has been speculated that this was Rembrandt’s portrait of Dr. Faustus and historians have attempted to determine which part of the play is depicted.
