This large medieval lectern Bible was written using a Gothic non-cursive angular script known as textura quadrata, literally “squared texture.” This revolutionary change resulted in text that was crisp and clean, making it easier to recognize and read. Of special note are the rubricated chapter numbers, initials, and marginalia in red and blue. The inverted letter “F” at the bottom left of the right column is actually a mistake. It should have been the letter “I.” This particular bible would have been used in a refectory, or dining room, rather than in a church.
