Hibbard was one of the most important landscape painters in New England during the twentieth century. He was born in Massachusetts and made his reputation painting mountain winter landscapes in Vermont and coastal views in Massachusetts. He was a founding member of the Rockport Art Association and adopted a “broken color” impressionist technique shortly after a trip to Europe in the years leading up to World War I. This colorful, early example demonstrates his energetic brushwork and vibrant color palette.
