The center of this scene shows a young attendant wearing an unusual costume and hat, pouring a pitcher of water into a basin in which Pilate washes his hands—symbolically disclaiming responsibility for the sentencing of Christ. Golgotha, the site where Christ was crucified, is visible in the background.
