In this moving work, Christ is flanked by his tormentors on left and right, bearing instruments of torture: one brandishes a whip, while the other raises a cluster of branches. Christ’s body has not yet been wounded by the punishment. Some scholars have suggested that the figure standing in the doorway on the right may be a self-portrait of Dürer.
