Agony in the Garden (Christ on the Mount of Olives)

After the Last Supper, Christ and three of his disciples go to the olive grove at Gethsemane. He tells his followers to wait while he prays. Already aware that he is about to be betrayed, Jesus becomes deeply saddened and distressed.

In this nocturnal scene, Christ reacts dramatically with raised arms to the angel bearing a cross who appears miraculously in the night sky. Below, Peter, James, and John are shown asleep, oblivious to the heavenly vision above.
