Carrying the cross to the site of his crucifixion, Christ occupies the center of the scene, flanked by a figure on the right who taunts him by pulling his robe. Kneeling on the left, St. Veronica holds the Veil (Sudarium), which will soon bear the miraculous image of Christ’s face. In the background, soldiers shout at the people, a motif that was taken up by Martin Schongauer, perhaps based on contemporary Passion plays.
