During much of Egyptian history, the lungs, liver, stomach, and intestines removed from the body were embalmed and stored in canopic jars. They were each stored in separate jars topped by a lid in the shape of a protective deity. This jar is Qebehsenuf, protector of the intestines. The jars were buried in tombs with the sarcophagus of the dead.
