Gaul was a member of the “Philadelphia Ten,” a group of women artists, but for one year only (1917), two years after this view of the docks on Martha’s Vineyard was completed. She attended Philadelphia’s School of Design for Women; among her teachers were Henry B. Snell and Elliot Daingerfield. The artist traveled abroad extensively throughout her career painting scenes outdoors, visiting Brittany, Athens, Messina, Algiers, Japan, China, and Thailand.
