Watson studied in Edinburgh under Alexander Naysmith (1758-1840) and spent two years in the studio of Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). He returned to Edinburgh and established himself as a popular portrait painter. Watson helped establish the Scottish Academy in 1820 and served as its first president until his death in 1837. He maintained a healthy rivalry with Sir Henry Raeburn, to whom this portrait was once attributed.
