Philadelphia artist Ethel Ashton first studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art and Design) in 1917. There, she bonded with fellow artists Alice Neel and Rhoda Myers Medary. Ashton traveled extensively throughout Europe in the 1920s to Mexico, Guatemala, Trinidad, and Panama. She often took as her subject the circus and carnival, such as in the current colorful example.
