The models in this composition were fellow Impressionist Berthe Morisot's daughter and her cousin Paulette Gobillard. Renoir first made a pastel and an oil of them in 1893. In 1894 he repeated the composition in an etching and in 1897-8 used it again in two lithographs commissioned by renowned French art dealer Ambroise Vollard.
