A native of Berks County, Dunkelberger studied art at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art with Thornton Oakley. He worked for a time as an illustrator for Harper’s Weekly. This large painting shows a group of women at a traditional quilting bee—a social gathering of women who were skilled in the art of quilting—in an interior decorated with a tall case clock and antique furniture.
