Von Wicht immigrated to the U.S. from Germany where he had studied in Darmstadt and Berlin before his service in WWI.

This typical work from the late 1950s demonstrates Von Wicht’s interest in an exploration of expressive color and movement in his compositions. His interest in non-Western calligraphy contributed to his abstract experiments during this phase of his career. The artist mounted his first exhibition in Paris in 1959, the same year of this large painting on paper.
