This print and the one to its left are excellent examples of the graphic work by Ernest Roth, who was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of five. He enrolled at the National Academy of Design in New York where he studied printmaking with James D. Smillie. He traveled to Italy, France, and Spain, absorbing the influences of James McNeill Whistler and European printmakers. He produced a series of images of Venice and depicted his scenes with remarkable accuracy and detail.
