The Inuit people often carved walrus tusk or bone toggles for utilitarian purposes such as ropes or for use as fishing lures. In the 1830's, with the establishment of the fur trade by the Hudson's Bay Company, trading posts were built to supply European trappers with needed goods. At that time the Inuit began carving animals and little toys as export items for the traders and so began the tourist trade, which still exists today.
