A native New York, Joffe trained at the Parsons School of Design, the School of Visual Arts, American Artists School, and the Pratt Institute. Following his army service in World War II, he found work as a commercial artist. Joffe exhibited at The American Academy of Arts & Letters and the National Academy of Design in New York, and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
The sitter in this striking modernist portrait is well-known Abstract Expressionist Theodoros Stamos (American, born in Greece, 1922 – 1997), who was a contemporary of Joffe and who appears in the famous photograph of “The Irascibles” alongside Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell and others.
