Born in Brooklyn, Marcune began his artistic studies at the San Francisco Art Institute and later trained in painting and sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he studied with Arthur Dacosta, Ben Kamihira, and Will Barnet. This portrait head relates to Marcune's interest in the performing arts. In addition to his work in the visual arts, Marcune performed as a lead dancer in the Philadelphia Civic Ballet. He has taught at Lehigh University and at Allentown's Baum School of Art.
