In the middle of the 19th century, Devlan took up the tradition of animal portraiture, which was an aspect of English art from the previous century. Prize cattle were memorialized by their owners on canvases. Devlan had a knack for capturing their individualized characteristics and created dynamic points of view and compositions which emphasized the creatures’ majestic presence.
