This scene was painted during the Behne’s brief time in Havana, Cuba, to which they fled during the American Civil War. This picturesque fortress stands at the entrance to Havana Harbor and was constructed at the end of the 16th century. Perched on the promontory on the opposite site of the harbor from Old Havana it can be viewed from miles as it dominates the port entrance.
