In 1915 Couse became one of the founding members of the Taos Society of Artists and spent many of his summers painting the Pueblo. In this painting, the vibrant colors of the Indian’s garments contrast with the chartreuse colors of the landscape. Couse’s technique is painterly, with bold, loose brushstrokes sustained by his remarkable ability to capture natural light.
