Boxer was a well-known New York-born abstract painter who studied at the Arts Students League. Critic Clement Greenberg considered Boxer a leading figure in the Color Field School of painting, a label that the artist himself rejected. His work is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum.
