Philadelphia born Whiteside was a student of Thomas Anshutz at the Pennsylvania Academy and took over the former studio of Robert Henri and William Glackens in Philadelphia from 1902 to 1921. This seascape dates from his Philadelphia years.

Later in his career, he began spending summers in the American Southwest, living for extensive periods with the Zuni Indians. He also painted the Apache and Hopis in Arizona.
