The narrow, acutely pointed blade of this dagger got its name from the Latin stilus (stylus).  The weapon had its origins in the early 16th century, but this classic form appeared during the 17th century.  Since the stiletto was small and readily concealed, it was ideal for personal defense or covert attack.
