This weapon is typical of many preserved swords, the pommel and the blade being a later composition of unrelated period pieces and modern restoration.  The pommel is original, and the blade is probably a “Pappenheimer” sword-rapier of the 17th century enhanced with later decoration to match the modern cross guard (quillons). This sword would have been used for stabbing or thrusting.
