Armor for a Youth

Armor for a Youth

Date: 19th century
Medium: steel, iron, solder, leather
Credit Line:Museum Purchase through the Levi W. Mengel Memorial Fund
Object number: 1954.57.10
This suit of armor for a youth is based on mid-16th century German style but dates to the 19th century and was probably made in an English workshop.  Although the inspiration for it is a composite, the suit of armor itself is homogeneous. The helmet style with its “monkey faced” visor is from 1510 – 1515. Youth’s armor became popular in the 19th century as decorative objects for interiors and showcased the highest quality of work by etchers of the time. The etching here is in the Northern Italian style. Note the floral and leaved volute tendrils with birds.
