Born in Hanover, Pennsylvania, Kessler earned a degree in fine arts from Kutztown University. A recipient of the Rome Prize (1990) and a Pollack Krasner Award (1992), he has taught at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Currently, he lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The artist is known for his layering of pigments and unique, textured surfaces in his abstract compositions.
