In this homage to the Renaissance master, Albrecht Dürer stands opposite himself across a table, the base of which is carved to depict a classically inspired mask. Above, the artist's coat of arms hangs in splendor, together with his epitaph from the Johannes Cemetery in Nuremberg, while the edge of the table bears Dürer's alleged motto, “Through work and constancy.” Included around the image are the tools used in his work as a printmaker, painter, draftsman, theorist, and writer. Kilian’s print is based in part on Dürer's self-portraits in the Heller Altarpiece and Adoration of the Trinity in the Landauer Altarpiece.
