A seated mother and child is an uncommon subject in figure groups among the Jama-Coaque and other cultures of the region.  Without an understanding of how figures were used in those cultures, it is difficult to say why they were so unusual.  The tender gesture of the infant touching its mother’s breast demonstrates the typical Jama-Coaque concern for creating images that portray real human actions, not stylized poses.
