A native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Demuth studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and made several visits to Paris where he discovered the art of Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse and Georges Braque. Demuth’s favorite subjects included night club scenes, vaudeville performers and floral still life. The artist preferred watercolor on paper over oils and did not arrive at his mature, Precisionist style until 1917.
