Inspired by his rural surroundings and his experiences in Europe, Fuller exhibited a body of work in Boston in 1876. At this time, the artist lived on a working farm in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The work he produced during this period demonstrates his interest in subtle tonalities and atmospheric effects. Fuller was hailed as “The Millet of America” after the French Barbizon painter, Jean-François Millet.
