In a letter from the artist’s widow dated 1925, she remarks, “This Still Life was painted by my husband and is a very well painted canvas—and most—interesting using his palettes.” In the work, inspired by European Old Masters, Chase depicts the tools of his craft: commercially produced tubes of paint, brushes, palette and a pounce—ball full of chalk used to transfer a preparatory drawing onto a canvas.
