Rumsey studied art in Paris, Harvard, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Horses, three of which are featured in this work, were central to Rumsey's life, and he expressed his love by continually returning to these animals as subject matter throughout his sculpting career; he was also known for his depictions of polo players, North American Indian warriors, Spanish "conquistadors", and large game animals.
