46th Station: Kameyama

Kameyama thrived as both a post town and a castle town. In this print, a daimyo procession is barely visible ascending a steep, tree covered hillside under deep snow. They climb towards the entrance to the castle, perched high on a stone retaining wall. This particular image highlights how hard it was to make the journey along the Tokaido during the Edo period.

Today, several of these historic sites remain, including the ruins of Kameyama Castle, the Edoguchi-mon and Kyoguchi-mon gates. Remnants of the ancient castle town include a temple, which used to be a part of the castle compound, the old samurai houses, and the right-angled streets.
