40th Station: Narumi

In this print, a woman is carried in a kago while two others walk in front of her. They are followed by a man on horseback and two attendants. Both parties pass by two large open shops in the main street, where dyed cloths are sold.

This station and the nearby town of Arimatsu are both famous for the production of tie-dyed fabrics, typically used for making summer kimonos (yukata), which was a local speciality of the region. Narumi had 847 buildings and a population of 3,643 people at its peak and so considered a very large post station.
