16th Station: Yui

In this scene Hiroshige chose not to depict the post station at all, but instead shows travelers climbing through the steep Satta-Toge Pass overlooking sailboats in Saruga Bay.

Satta-Toge Pass, approximately two miles long, is famously dangerous. It is located between the Okitsu and Yui stations. The view of Mount Fuji from this area is often picked as the quintessential scene representing Japan. Even today, Mount Fuji looks exactly like the ukiyo-e woodblock by Hiroshige, yet this narrow strip is so packed with vehicles that the serene aspect of the view is somewhat lost.
