During the Edo Period, traveling on the highway was considered very dangerous and women travelers were usually accompanied by at least one manservant. Here, two women travelers, with a servant carrying their boxes, pass by rice fields overlooked by a huge snowy Mount Fuji. Note the two herons wading in the mid-ground marshes.
The neighborhood of Hara is considered the best vantage point for magnificent views of Mount Fuji and is the subject of many paintings.
