2nd Station: Kawasaki

In this print, travelers waiting on the shore to cross the river by ferryboat may have felt like they were being carried towards a different world. However, those returning to Edo were most likely looking forward to re-entering their familiar homeland. Those beginning their journey were treated to a first glimpse of Mount Fuji, while those returning from their long trip were leaving this iconic view behind.

This desolate area along the seashore is now an important industrial district of Japan.
